| PSTN | Public Switched Telephone Network. The analogue telephone network originally established over a hundred years ago and to which all subscribers were connected before ISDN was introduced to replace it. Used for voice and data transmission. However, data speeds are limited to less than 64kbit/s, and in practice to between 9.6kbit/s and 56kbit/s. A telephone line from the local telephone exchange to a master socket in the subscriber's premises was called Direct Exchange Lines. A telephone lines from the local telephone exchange to a telephone system in the subscriber's premises was called an Exchange Line. The voltage on a PSTN exchange line (Direct Exchange Line) is 50 volts DC. The ringing voltage on a PSTN exchange line is 125 volts AC. |
