Bit	A one or a zero. Eight bits equal one Byte in IT terms, or one Octet in telephony signalling terms. Either is sufficient for one character. The word comes from a contraction of the words Binary Digit. see Digital Signal. Other multiplers for bits, are, kilobit (kbit) - 10 to the power of 3 Megabit (Mbit) - 10 to the power of 6 Gigabit (Gbit) - 10 to the power of 9 Terabit (Tbit) - 10 to the power of 12 Petabit (Pbit) - 10 to the power of 15 Exabit (Ebit) - 10 to the power of 18 Zettabit (Zbit) - 10 to the power of 21 Yottabit (Ybit) - 10 to the power of 24
