SDSL connections discontinued
As the national roll out of BT’s new 21st Century (21CN) network gathers pace, du Pré is reminding businesses with SDSL connections that they will need to consider moving these to alternate arrangements because SDSL is not supported on the new technology.
SDSL stands for Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The service was initially launched for businesses requiring connections with identical upload and download speeds. Traditional ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) connections have high download and low upload speeds, not ideal for businesses looking to push data to remote servers.
In the 10 years since SDSL was launched replacement technologies have emerged that can high bandwidth symmetric connectivity. There has been over £350 million worth of investment in improving the UK’s data network, and a further £520 million of government funding is set aside to improve connectivity for properties in non urban locations. The aim is for 10 million properties to have access to high speed connections by early 2012.
With a plethora of broadband connections now available it is important to consider the ongoing and future needs of the business before deciding on a replacement to SDSL. The type of connection available depends on location and the status of the local exchange, among other factors. Please contact the du Pré sales team who will be able to offer advice on the connections available in your area.
